How is each print prepared?
Each Rodney Smith Estate print is custom made to the artist’s exact specifications from Smith’s original negative by Patricia Barrett, who has been the master printer and archivist at the Rodney Smith studio for almost 20 years.
Smith was notoriously meticulous, precise and demanding, constantly seeking perfection in his work. That obsessive attention to detail became part of Barrett’s aesthetic too, ultimately earning her the highest praise and trust from Smith.
“Patricia is the most masterful printer I know. I studied the art of black and white printmaking for many years, and Patricia has far surpassed my ability. Her presence is in every picture I produce. I see the picture; she makes it real.” —rodney smith

How are the prints authenticated?
Estate prints are authenticated in three ways:
- Un-mounted archival pigment prints are numbered and blind embossed with the Rodney Smith chop on the front, as well as stamped and signed in pencil on the back.
- Silver gelatin prints are mounted on museum quality matt-board, and stamped and signed in pencil on the back.
- Each original print is paired with a Certificate of Authenticity listing the artist’s name, the title of the photograph, the negative date, the edition number, and the print date. Leslie Smolan, Rodney Smith’s wife and Executive Director of the Estate, signs and authenticates all prints.
